About news.announce.newusers

The newsgroup news.announce.newusers contains a set of basic informational postings that should be read by all newcomers to newsgroups. These postings are repeated periodically, so that they should usually be available on most news servers. No question/answer or discussion postings are permitted in this newsgroup; such postings should be made in news.newusers.questions instead. Attempted postings to news.announce.newusers will generally be returned to their senders.

news.announce.newusers was created in the so-called "Great Renaming" of 1986, which created the first seven of the "Big Eight" newsgroup hierarchies (comp, misc, news, rec, sci, soc and talk; humanities came later). Gene Spafford served as its first moderator. In 1993, he transferred responsibility for the group to Mark Moraes, who in turn transferred it to the news.newusers.questions Moderation Board in 2001.

The n.n.q Moderation Board is currently reviewing the standard news.announce.newusers informational postings, and will post updated versions and new articles.

Comments and suggestions about the contents of news.announce.newusers should be posted to news.newusers.questions for public discussion, or alternatively e-mailed to nnq-adm at presby.edu.
