Text: Conversación y controversia.

Absences: Attendance is the minimal requirement for class participation. Each student may be absent a maximum of three times (unexcused) during the semester. The final grade will be lowered by one point (1% of the total) for each absence over. Attendance will be taken every day. Absences for illness can be excused only if you meet the requirements of the Knapsack. If you are late for class, it is your responsibility to make sure you have not been marked absent.

Compositions: Six compositions will count for a grade during the semester. The seventh composition grade (the lowest) will be dropped. We will cover nine chapters and will view two movies. You can choose to write about any of these topics. The composition will be due in a maximum of a week after completing the chapter or viewing the movie. Students can consult with the Amity Scholars for help on the compositions. Compositions will be corrected using a correction code (which will be passed out) and all compositions must be corrected and kept in a folder, which will be collected from time to time.

Oral Presentations: There will be four oral presentations during the semester. Each will be on a specific topic and will last for a specific period of time, usually a couple of minutes. Possible themes would be a self-presentation, show and tell, or a skit.

The final exam is to be taken by all students. It will be cumulative; that is, it will include work of the entire semester. It will include an oral component, which will possibly consist of a short, one-on-one conversation, short answer essays, a long essay, and , possibly, a few sections on grammatical or vocabulary covered during the semester. Extra credit on an individual basis is not allowed.

Grading:
Compositions (6 of 7).......................................................30%
Oral Presentations (4).......................................................20%
Class Participation.............................................................25%
Final Exam........................................................................25%

Mesa Hispánica: On Wednesdays at 1:00 in Greenville Dining Hall the Spanish professors and assistants converse in Spanish during lunch. Students in all Spanish classes are invited to join the group for informal practice in a relaxed setting.

Honor System: Please be familiar with the provisions of the PC Honor Code (see the Knapsack). The Honor Code is important. Please abide by it. The policy of the department of Foreign Languages is that a student who cheats will receive an "F" for the course.

The instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus during the semester.
