Text: Conversación y controversia and Schaum's Easy Outlines: Spanish

Absences: Attendance is the minimal requirement for class participation. Each student may be absent a maximum of two times (unexcused) during the semester. The final grade will be lowered by one point (11/2% of the total) for each absence over. Attendance will be taken every day. Absences for illness can be excused only if you meet the requirements of the Knapsack. If you are late for class, it is your responsibility to make sure you have not been marked absent.

Compositions: You will write six compositions during the semester. We will cover ten chapters and will view two movies. With the exception of the first composition, which is a self presentation, you can choose to write about any of these topics. Every two chapters you will have a composition due, and you can choose to write about a topic from either chapter. You are strongly encouraged to consult with the Amity Scholars for help on the compositions. Compositions will be corrected using a correction code (which will be passed out) and all compositions must be corrected and kept in a folder, which will be collected from time to time. You will also be given a form to track your errors in compositions. Compositions should be between a page and a half to two pages, skipping every other line.

Oral Presentations: There will be two oral presentations during the semester. The first will be a self presentation, and the second will be show and tell. Each presentation should last from four to five minutes. During most classes we will have two to three students giving oral presentations. There will be a sign-up sheet for days for each presentation. While you can use note cards, reading a presentation is unacceptable and will result in a significantly lower grade. As with the compositions, you are encouraged to consult with the Amity Scholars.

Grammar/Vocabulary tests: In each chapter there is a short section on grammar and vocabulary. In addition, you are expected to work on your own with the Schaum's Easy Outlines: Spanish book, which reviews Spanish grammar, and has exercises with answers at the back of the book. Twice during the semester you will have a test based on the grammar from both books and the vocabulary.

Class participation: Success in the study of Spanish depends largely on frequent exposure to the language. Regular work outside of class and in-class participation are essential. Speaking in a classroom can be difficult for many of us, but a language class is a participatory experience. Your grade will be based on the improvement in your Spanish, attendance, preparation for class, and participation in class. You should be prepared to participate actively in class. Many activities involve working with a partner or in groups. If you are absent or unprepared, you not only hurt yourself, but fellow students.

The final exam is to be taken by all students. It will be cumulative; that is, it will include work of the entire semester. Extra credit on an individual basis is not allowed.

Grading:
Compositions (6)........................................................30%
Oral Presentations (2).................................................10%
Grammar/Vocabulary Tests (2)..................................20%
Class Participation......................................................15%
Final Exam.................................................................25%

Mesa Hispánica: On Wednesdays at 1:00 in Greenville Dining Hall the Spanish professors and Amity Scholars converse in Spanish during lunch. Students in all Spanish classes are invited to join the group for informal practice in a relaxed setting.

Honor System: Please be familiar with the provisions of the PC Honor Code (see the Knapsack). The Honor Code is important. Please abide by it. The policy of the department of Foreign Languages is that a student who cheats will receive an "F" for the course.

The instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus during the semester.
