Course Objectives: Spanish 332 provides an introduction to Spanish-American politics, culture, and literature through the study of selections of major works from the twentieth century. This course will further develop the skills of understanding, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish, and foster a greater understanding of Spanish America.
Text: The textbook is Introducción a la literatura hispanoamericana: de la conquista al siglo XX, by Gladys M. Varona-Lacey. The textbook was chosen because it facilitates the reading and understanding of the texts. Each selection has a short biography introducing the writer and explaining his or her significance. The section entitled "Al leer considere lo siguiente" helps guide your reading and to prepare you for the reading selection. Each text has many footnotes, reducing the time spent using the dictionary. The "Después de leer" section has questions based on important aspects of the reading.
Requirements and procedures: The success of this class depends greatly on the active participation of everyone in the class. We will normally spend two classes per writer. Depending on the length of the text and the speed of the class, we may spend more or less time on each writer. Each student is expected to have read the text(s) and to have completed the assignments. Instead of being a lecture class, it is more of a seminar environment. Therefore, the active participation of everyone is crucial to the success of the class. It is also a way for everyone to practice his or her Spanish. The class participation grade will include the following aspects of your participation in class: attendance, completing homework, being prepared, actively participating in class activities, and effort.
The exams will be take-home exams. A week or two before the exams and the final exam, I will hand out the exam questions. You can use a dictionary and your notes in answering these questions. Since you will have had time to reflect upon these questions, your answers are expected to be well-organized and supported by the texts and class discussions. While you can work with other students in preparing for the exam, your answers on the exam are your responsibility alone. You can also consult with the Amity assistants for help with grammar and style questions. While I do not expect perfect Spanish, you should make a resonable effort to express yourself as well as you can in the language.
Grading: Two Exams: 50%
Final Exam: 25%
Class Participation: 25%
