Spanish 341 (Business Spanish) is designed to give advanced-intermediate and
advanced-level students a solid foundation in business vocabulary, basic business and
cultural concepts, and situational practice necessary to be successful in today's
Spanish-speaking business world. It also aims to further the development of the skills of
understanding, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.
Texts: Doyle, Fryer, Cere, Exito comercial (2nd edition) and Cuaderno (2nd edition).
Exams: There will be two hour exams during the semester and a cumulative final exam.
Oral Presentations and Country Essays: Twice during the semester you will lead the class discussion on a country. This will entail leading the discussion on the reading from the text as well as adding other information that you have gleaned from researching the country. The presentation should last around 15 minutes. Sources for your presentation can include the textbook, sources from the library, and, for the most up-to-date materials, you can consult the Internet. An excellent starting point on the Internet is the Latin American Information Center (http://lanic.utexas.edu). You will write a short report (2-3 printed, double-spaced pages) on the country. You need to go over your paper with one of the Amity scholars before turning in the paper. You will turn in a rough draft, signed by the Amity scholar, with the final version.
Class Participation: Success in the study of Spanish depends largely on frequent exposure to the language. Regular work outside of class and in-class participation are essential. Speaking in a classroom can be difficult for many of us, but a language class is a participatory experience. Your grade will be based on the improvement in your spoken Spanish, attendance, preparation for class, participation in class, and translations.
Translations: In every chapter we will have a short translation from English to
Spanish. These translations should be printed out. You need to go over your translation
with one of the Amity scholars before turning it in. You will turn in the rough draft,
signed by the Amity scholar, with the final version. Translations will be graded credit/no
credit.
