Objectives: the course aims to further the development of the skills of understanding, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. A student who successfully completes the course should have an ability to communicate on everyday topics, an understanding of major aspects of Hispanic heritage and attitudes, and a readiness for advanced work in civilization and literature.

Texts: Jarvis, Lebredo, ¡Continuemos! (5th edition), Workbook/Lab Manual, and Aventuras literarias (4th edition). Other aids such as films, slides, and tapes may occasionally be used.

A set of cassette tapes will be left on reserve in the College library. You need to go there, check out the tape that contains the chapter you are working on, and do the lab exercises. You may also record the tape and do the work in your room.

Requirements and Procedures: The schedule indicates what material is to be prepared for the class of the date listed, and when the exams will be given.

Students are expected to spend about two hours of outside study for each class hour. After each class, review the material covered in that class and then prepare the assignment for the next class. For reading assignments, review each passage enough times to be familiar with the new vocabulary and structures. Many students make flashcards for learning vocabulary. Write out exercises in preparation for the next class. They will be collected at times for the instructor to evaluate.

The exercises in the workbook and lab manual are due on the day of exams. No late work will be accepted. In the workbook, complete the written exercises, then correct your work by checking the Answer Key found at the end of the workbook. MAKE ALL CORRECTIONS WITH A PEN/PENCIL OF CONTRASTING COLOR. Some sections are for your creative expression; therefore, no answer key is provided. Your instructor will check your work.

There will be three in-class compositions and two oral presentations. The in-class compositions will be loosely based on readings. The oral presentations will last from 2-3 minutes and will be done in front of the class.

Absences: Attendance is the minimal requirement for class participation. Remember that students who make a D or an F on any exam will be limited to one unexcused absence for the remainder of the semester. Read the absence regulations in the Knapsack and keep a record of your absences. Each student may be absent a maximum of three times (unexcused) during the semester. The final grade will be lowered by one point (1% of the total) for each absence over. Attendance will be taken every day. For more than 10 absences, the student will be dropped from the course with a grade of "F." If you must be absent, try to arrange for another student to pick up handouts for you and to tell you what material you missed. Absences for illness can be excused only if you meet the requirements of the Knapsack. If you are late for class, it is your responsibility to make sure you have not been marked absent.

Scheduled exams are not made up for credit after the date they are given unless the student has an excused absence. The final exam is to be taken by all students. It will be cumulative; that is, it will include work of the entire semester. A portion of the final exam will include the placement exam. Extra credit on an individual basis is not allowed.

Grading: Exams (3)..................................................36%
Compositions(3)......................................................15%

Mesa Hispánica: On Wednesdays at 1:00 in Greenville Dining Hall the Spanish teachers and assistants converse in Spanish during lunch. Students in all Spanish classes are invited to join the group for informal practice in a relaxed setting.

Honor System: Please be familiar with the provisions of the PC Honor Code (see the Knapsack). The Honor Code is important. Please abide by it. The policy of the department of Foreign Languages is that a student who cheats will receive an "F" for the course.

The instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus during the semester.
