Course: Spanish 102 (four credits) provides an acquaintance with the basic structure and vocabulary of Spanish, with classroom and laboratory experience designed to develop skill in understanding, speaking, reading and writing.
Objectives: The course aims to develop the skills of understanding, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. Furthermore, an awareness of Hispanic culture will be developed. A student who successfully completes the course should be able to converse in simple Spanish on everyday topics. The student will be able to ask directions, order meals, read and write simple messages on these topics, and to understand the cultural context in which this communication might take place. In addition, the student should become more aware of cultural diversity in general, of the interaction between language and culture, and of the structure of English by way of contrast with Spanish.
Texts: Dicho y hecho Textbook and Workbook/Lab Manual (6th edition) Other aids such as films, slides, and tapes may occasionally be used.
A set of cassette tapes will be left on reserve in the library. You need to go there, check out the tape that contains the chapter you are working on, and do the lab exercises. You may also record the tape and do the work elsewhere.
Requirements and Procedures: The schedule shows what material is to be prepared for the class of the date listed, and when the exams will be given. Students are expected to spend a minimum of one hour and a half of outside study for each class hour. After each class, review the material covered in that class and then prepare the assignment for the next class. For reading assignments, review each passage enough times to be familiar with the new vocabulary and structures. Many students make flash cards for learning vocabulary. Write out exercises in preparation for the next class. They may occasionally be collected for the instructor to evaluate.
The exercises in the workbook and lab manual are due on the day of exams. No late work will be accepted. In the workbook, complete the written exercises, then correct your work by checking the Answer Key found at the end of the workbook. MAKE ALL CORRECTIONS WITH A PEN/PENCIL OF CONTRASTING COLOR. Some sections are for your creative expression; therefore, no answer key is provided. Your instructor will check your work.
Absences: Attendance is the minimal requirement for class participation. Read the absence regulations in the Knapsack and keep a record of your absences. Each student may be absent a maximum of four times (unexcused) during the semester. The final grade will be lowered by one point (1% of the total) for each absence over. Attendance will be taken every day. Absences for illness can be excused only if you meet the requirements of the Knapsack. If you are late for class, it is your responsibility to make sure you have not been marked absent.
Scheduled exams are not made up for credit after the date they are given unless the student has an excused absence. Students with an excused absence must make up the exam within two days of returning to class. The final exam is to be taken by all students. It will be cumulative; that is, it will include work of the entire semester. Extra credit on an individual basis is not given.
Honor System: Please be familiar with the provisions of the PC Honor Code (see the Knapsack). The Honor Code is important. Please abide by it. The policy of the department of Foreign Languages is that a student who cheats will receive an "F" for the course.
