You're welcome to save copies of these pictures for your personal "private" use. If you'd like to use copies of them for some public purpose, please contact me. Since I use my employer's resources to host this Web site, I have to abide by their terms, which forbid commercial for-profit use. On the other hand, academic, non-profit and governmental use is OK with me, and anything that can be considered as "community service" activities. For example:
All I ask is that you credit the source of the pictures, with something like "Dr. Jon Bell, Presbyterian College, Clinton SC", and that you let me know about it so that I can verify it and make a note of it for my files. If it's a printed publication, I'd appreciate a copy or photocopy if possible. It might come in handy if I ever have to justify the disk space I'm using here.
Depending on the use that you plan to make of these pictures, you may also need to get permission from the agencies whose property they depict. I do not have property-release forms for these pictures, nor do I have any authority to grant permission on the agencies' behalf.
I can supply higher-resolution TIFF or JPEG images for printing, if necessary. Through 2002, the originals are usually 35mm negatives (usually Kodak Royal Gold 100 or 200). I currently use a Nikon film scanner that can produce up to 2700 pixels per inch from the film. From 2003 onward, the originals are 2560x1920 (5 megapixel) JPEGs from a digital camera.
If you'd like to link to my pages from one of your own, I have no problem with that, except perhaps if it causes a large increase in traffic that affects our server or network adversely. If something like that happens, I'll be sure to let you or your Webmaster know! :-)
Please do not link directly to a picture in such a way that the picture automatically comes up when someone views the page (often called hotlinking), unless I give you specific permission to do so. It's not just a matter of appropriate use or giving proper credit; it's also a matter of my employer's server resources and network capacity.
In particular, when someone hotlinks a bunch of my pictures in a bulletin-board posting, my employer's server gets hit for all of those pictures every time a new person opens that posting. The server is configured to reject such requests when it can detect them. In such situations, please use a clickable link to the page that contains the pictures, so that readers can decide whether to view the pictures (and which ones).
In general, if you want to use one of my pictures as part of your page layout (and I give permission to do so, according to the general usage conditions above), I much prefer that you put a copy of the picture on your server and link to that.
Please don't use Web-spidering software to download the whole site (or large parts of it) automatically. This includes things like Internet Explorer's "offline mode" feature. If my bandwidth usage goes up enough to impact other users of my employer's network, I'll probably have to cut back on the number of images I keep here.
