Nashville, Tennessee:
Music City Star Commuter Rail

Description

The Music City Star is a commuter rail service that connects downtown Nashville with Lebanon, Tennessee, a distance of about 32 miles (52 km) to the east. It uses the tracks of the Nashville and Eastern Railroad, which were once part of the former Tennessee Central Railway. Service began in September 2006.

Trains run only on weekdays, during the morning and afternoon peak periods, roughly 6 to 9 AM and 3:30 to 6:30 PM. In each period, there are two round trips over the entire line, and one between Nashville and Mt. Juliet, at about the line's midpoint. There is also one round trip on Friday evenings.

The equipment is all second-hand: two locomotives from Amtrak, and seven bi-level gallery-type passenger coaches from Chicgo's Metra. Most stations are simple concrete platforms and shelters with parking lots. The Riverfront station in downtown Nashville is more substantial, but has only one track.

This line is intended as a "starter" line, the first of as many as seven radiating out from Nashville. During spring 2010, ridership was in the range of 800-900 one-way trips per day.
