Dayton Trolleybus Routes

All routes are operated as "through" routes which pass through downtown Dayton and meet at the intersection of Third St. (routes 1, 2, 3 and 4) and Main St. (routes 5, 7 and 8). (See map)

The table below compares the electric routes in March 1974 and September 2000. The through-routing patterns have changed because three half-routes have been converted from electric to diesel, one has been converted from diesel to electric, and others have been switched around to balance traffic. Also, some routes have changed names (at least as indicated on destination signs). Each entry in the table shows the same physical half-route.

Route names and notes are from field observations by R. T. Morrow, and old rollsigns in his collection.

Notes

Route 1 (West Third - East Third) has occasional diesel service during the day, and is all diesel at night and on weekends.

Route 2 (Lexington / Fifth St.) has been extended beyond the overhead wire on both ends, and most trips use diesel buses. About five "short turn" trips per day use trolleybuses.

Route 3 east (Wayne Ave.) has mixed electric and diesel service during the day. Two trolleys alternate with one diesel. On 21 August 2000 the trolleys were extended from Wayne and Fauver to the Eastown Hub, taking over the loop via Hearthstone formerly served by route 4. The diesels continue eastward along Wayne to Woodbine and Spaulding. At night and on weekends only trolleys to Eastown operate.

Route 3 west (Townview) was electrified in 1999, using new wire on the branch north of West Third St. At night and on weekends it is combined with route 1 as a diesel route.

Route 4 east (Xenia Ave.) formerly served the one-way loop via Hearthstone and Smithville, and did not reach the Eastown Hub. On 21 August 2000, route 4 was extended to the Eastown Hub, and route 3 took over the Hearthstone loop.

Route 8 north (Salem Ave.) was extended on 21 August 2000 from Fairgreen to the Northwest Hub. On weekdays, every second trip short-turns at Fairgreen (the former terminus).

One branch of route 8 south was extended on 21 August 2000 from Lakeview to the Westown Hub via Gettysburg Rd. and West Third St. During the evening this route turns back at Lakeview, then serves the branch to Nicholas Rd. before returning downtown.
