Charlotte Trolley: 1997—2001

Description

These pictures show the Charlotte Trolley while it was still using the original track left behind by the Norfolk Southern Railroad, before it was replaced with new track in 2001.

Pictures

[June 2001] Car #85 lays over at Atherton Mill, in front of the carbarn.

[June 2001] After leaving Atherton Mill, #85 rolls down the spur track towards Tremont Avenue, where it will join the "mainline."

[June 1997] #85 crosses East Boulevard, protected by a policeman who rode the car and hopped off at each crossing. This was necessary until the line was rebuilt with crossing gates in 2006-08 for the Lynx light rail.

[October 1997] #85 leaves the bridge after crossing the I-277 expressway, with the uptown Charlotte skyline in the background. The place where I stood is now the site of the Grandview Summit condominium building.

[June 1999] The old Stonewall station at the north end of the I-277 bridge, in a view looking back across the bridge towards the Morehead Street overpass. When construction began in 2001 for the Westin hotel at this site, the station structure was moved to Bland Street.

[October 1997] Interior of car #85.

[October 1997] Historical displays in the carbarn at Atherton Mill. The table at left is set up for a birthday party. The carbarn was remodeled in early 2004 to make more office space, which took over most of this exhibit area.

[June 1997] Other cars being restored in the carbarn at Atherton Mill.

Summer 2001 Temporary Route

During track reconstruction in summer 2001, the Charlotte Trolley operated a temporary service running southward from Atherton Mill, to a point between Clanton and Scaleybark Roads.

[June 2001] After entering the main line from the Atherton Mill spur, #85 had to reverse direction so it could head south for the temporary route.

[June 2001] #85 crosses Clanton Road. This crossing and the intersection of South Blvd. with Clanton Road were rebuilt completely for the Lynx light rail.

[July 2001] #85 runs alonside South Blvd., south of Clanton Road. This location is now in the median of South Blvd. north of the Scaleybark station.

[July 2001] The end of the line between Clanton and Scaleybark Roads was signaled by this sign. On an early horsecar line in Charlotte, the horses learned to stop by themselves at signs like these!
