On a Saturday morning, February 3, Writing Center tutors and three members of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, met at Martha Dendy Middle School to serve with PC's outreach program CHAMPS (Communities, Helping, Assisting, and Motivating Promising Students). The goal of this program is to "provide promising students with a vision of their future and stimulate them to strive toward post-secondary education."
With this goal in mind, Writing Center Coordinator Jill Frey and Jerry Alexander, English instructor and Sigma Tau Delta advisor, led a writing workshop focused on teaching middle and high school students, along with some of their parents, how to write personal statements. Tutors Elizabeth Michael, Sarah Wells, and Katie Lenhart with Anna Beale, Doodle Harris, and Jill Walker (also a tutor) from the honor society worked one-on-one with the students, helping them learn to be specific and concrete in their writing. Lenhart says, "It is always rewarding to be able to teach and encourage someone in an area you love."
