Practicum Courses
Ten students enrolled in two new one-hour practicum courses in
the Writing Center. ENGL/INTD 220, required of students before
tutoring, introduces them to writing center theory and practice.
Class sessions cover the principles of tutoring; prewriting, revising,
editing and style; questioning and listening strategies; and citing
sources. Students read and write, analyze sample papers,
and roleplay conferences. After classroom instruction, they observe
experienced tutors, tutor beside an experienced tutor, and eventually
tutor on their own.
The second practicum, ENGL/INTD 326, is open to experienced tutors.
They mentor new tutors, complete a semester project that benefits
the writing center, and tutor at least three hours a week.

Tutoring
Notebooks Writing Center tutors now keep notebooks to use with each conference. The notebooks have the week's assignments from professors, relevant handouts, and professors' guides to writing. An erasable calendar on the bulletin board nearby notes assignment deadlines so that tutors can adjust their schedules to be available when needed. |
