Presbyterian College > Academic Web Server > Support > Access
In order to log onto this server (titanium.presby.edu) and transfer files to it, you must have a login ID and password. Any Presbyterian College faculty member, staff member or student may get an account. Contact the Web Servant (webservant at presby.edu) to set one up.
If you are connecting to this server from inside the campus network (e.g. from a computer lab, faculty office, dorm room, or campus dialup line), you can log on and gain access to a Unix command line via any telnet or secure shell program.
For example, under Macintosh OS X, you can launch the Terminal application (probably located in Applications --> Utilities) and type telnet titanium or ssh yourloginID@titanium.
Under Macintosh OS 8 or 9, you can use the Versaterm application (or something similar), which many people used for connecting to this server's predecessor, cs1.presby.edu; or a secure shell application such as MacSSH.
Under MS Windows, you can use the Windows Terminal application, or any of a number of shareware or freeware terminal programs. You can also use a secure shell client such as PuTTY, which you can find at downloads.com.
If you are outside the campus network (e.g. using some other college or university's network, or using a commercial ISP from home), you must use a secure shell program, e.g. ssh in a Mac OS X terminal window, or MacSSH under Mac OS 8/9, or PuTTY under MS Windows. Any program that uses the SSH protocol should work.
If you are inside the campus network, you can use any FTP application to transfer files to and from this server. Many Web-publishing programs have this ability built in.
If you are using Microsoft FrontPage, you must specify the upload location as http://titanium.presby.edu/~loginID/Sites/ (substitute your actual login ID for 'loginID').
If you are outside the campus network, you must use a secure FTP application that transmits data over a secure shell (SSH) connection.
Under Macintosh OS X, you can use the sftp or scp commands in a Terminal window.
Under Macintosh OS 8/9, you can use MacSFTP.
Under MS Windows, I've heard good reports about FileZilla.
