Ranger Challenge

This unit is a voluntary organization open to all participating cadets. The company is designed to aid character development by promoting maturity, responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills. In addition to physical training, members of the Ranger Company receive training in patrolling, map reading and small unit tactics.  The Rangers compete annually in a Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition, normally held during the Fall semester of each school year and a local Head-to-Head competition, including the following areas:

Army Physical Fitness Test
Written Land Navigation Test
Basic Rifle Marksmanship
Weapons Assembly
Grenade Assault Course
One-rope Bridge
Orienteering
10K Road March

Field Training Exercise (FTX)

Each semester, Army R.O.T.C. sponsors a weekend-long Field Training Exercise (FTX). During FTXs, cadets are afforded the opportunity to travel to and train within U.S. Army installations.

FLRC (Field Leadership Reaction Course)

The field leadership reaction course is an exciting event consisting of twelve stations that require a squad (5-9 persons) to cross an physical obstacle and accomplish a task (move a 55 gal barrel or steel ammunition container to the far side) in the process of crossing. To accomplish these task, participants may only use the resources provided (typically a short length of rope, a wooden plank, etc.).

The first six stations are land (dry) and the last six involve crossing standing water (several feet deep). Each station is physically challenging but each can be accomplished. While physical effort is essential, it is the leadership dimension that is truly tested at FLRC. Leadership skills are tested here like nowhere else -- the leader must be either able to recognize the essential steps to cross the obstacle and communicate them effectively or solicit other suggestions and adopt ONE and keep all the squad members focused upon that one course of action until the task is either accomplished or it is obvious it will not work -- then quickly select another course of action and implement it.

During training at the field leadership reaction course, cadets are divided into squads of 6-8 cadets. The squads are given a set amount of time to negotiate each of the stations. The stations are each a contained in a three sided cubical made of cinder blocks so that no squad can see how the next squad is attempting to solve the next station.

Each cadet who negotiates the FLRC realizes the importance of good leadership, follower-ship, and problem solving skills. Education and adventure training at its best.

Physical Training

Physical Training in the Scottish Highlander Battalion occurs four days a week.  On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, cadets gather for a planned PT session.  Each session last from 06:00 to 07:00 and is conducted by one of the contracted cadets.  On Tuesday, cadets have the choice of participating in PT either in the morning or afternoon.  PT sessions vary from 3-5 mile runs, to circuit training, to sports.  Every 30 days cadets are tested according to the Army Physical Fitness Test, which consist of a timed 2-mile run, timed push-ups, and timed sit-ups.
