Service

Volunteer service is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of any fraternal organization, and Kappa Alpha has always recognized the basic necessity of promoting  member involvement in aiding those less fortunate than ourselves.

Kappa Alpha's national philanthropy is the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  KA and MDA have had a long and fruitful relationship.  Since 1975, when MDA was introduced as the fraternal organization's official philanthropy, Kappa Alpha has raised approximately $140,000 per year to help MDA.

Beta Pi alone has earned up to $10,000 yearly to contribute to MDA.  Last year we raised over $4000 for Dystrophy which was ranked top 10 in the country out of all KA chapters.  That's a small step in combating the 40 neuromuscular diseases affecting millions of Americans, yet the brothers of Beta Pi believe it is a step in the right direction.

This year, the brothers of Beta Pi plan to hold a shamrock sale, football sale, a lockup, and an alumni golf tournament, among other events meant to encourage financial support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Project Outreach was established in 1993 to include all KA philanthropies, and is thus considered the mechanism for promoting service throughout the national chapter network.  The project educates members about serving their communities.

Beta Pi currently participates in the South Carolina Adopt-A-Highway program, routinely cleaning a two mile stretch of road flanking the Presbyterian College campus.  Adopt-A-Highway helps beautify Clinton, SC, promoting a sense of community responsibility in the brotherhood.

We also do service work for the local Presbyterian church, participate in the annual Service Day at PC, and hold a party with the sisters of ZTA for the folks at the Presbyterian Home, a local retirement center.

Another very important service fulfilled by members of Beta Pi is working with the Thornwell Orphanage.  The brothers of Beta Pi hold a Christmas Party each year for the kids providing gifts, food, and entertainment for the Thornwell children.  Helping the children of Thornwell has been a major concern of the Beta Pi brotherhood for years, and will continue to be a priority in years to come.

The service aspect of Kappa Alpha Order is very much bound to the teachings of the organization's spiritual founder, Robert Edward Lee.  The famous Civil War general once said,

"Duty is the sublimest word in the English language, you cannot do more than your duty, you should never wish to do less."
