The Honors Program

A variety of opportunities are available to highly motivated students with above average abilities through the normal programs of the college. These include research, internships, special projects, and directed studies.

Presbyterian College also offers a special Honors Program for students who are chosen on the basis of their demonstrated ability. This program includes three principal parts: the Dean’s Seminar for freshmen, the Honors Seminar in Great Ideas, and Departmental Honors Research. Approximately fifteen entering freshmen are chosen on the basis of application materials, recommendations, and interviews to participate in a year-long non-credit seminar focusing on major issues in education, values, and ethics. Selected students join the Vice president for Academic Affairs and the Associate Academic Dean for dinner, discussions, cultural events off campus, and a retreat in January.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may be eligible to participate for credit in the Honors Seminar in Great Ideas, a seminar program offered by the Presbyterian College faculty. Important works chosen by the participating faculty will form the basis of far-ranging discussions on major issues and opportunities in our culture.

Students with a 3.2 GPR in all courses and a 3.4 GPR in all courses in the major field may, with the approval of departmental faculty, undertake an Honors Research Program during the junior and senior years.

Oral and written presentations of the results of the project will be required. Students who successfully complete the Departmental Honors Research Program will graduate with honors in the major discipline.
