Baltimore, Maryland / Washington, DC:
MARC commuter rail

Description

Commuter rail service from Washington DC to surrounding areas in Maryland (including Baltimore) is operated by the Maryland Transit Administration of the Maryland Department of Transportation, under the name MARC (MAryland Rail Commuter). There are three routes:

On weekdays, trains run about hourly through the morning and afternoon on the Penn Line between Washington and Baltimore. Service is less frequent on the Camden Line. Trains serve only rush-hour commuter traffic (inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon) on the Brunswick Line and on the Penn Line between Baltimore and Perryville. There is no service at all on weekends.

Pictures

[picture] Most of MARC's locomotives are diesel-electrics. Here, a train headed by a GP40WH-2 locomotive (originally built by EMD, rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen) arrives at Washington Union Station. (March 1998)

[picture] MARC does operate a few AEM7 electric locomotives (built by EMD) on the Penn Line. Here's one waiting to leave Washington Union Station. (March 1998)

[picture] Two locomotives wait at Union Station: another GP40WH-2, and a GP39H-2 (also originally from EMD, rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen). (March 1998)

[picture] A southbound train on the Penn Line stops at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. This train is operating in "push mode", with the locomotive at the rear. To get to or from the airport itself, one has to use a free shuttle bus that operates every twenty minutes. (March 1998)

[picture] This Camden Line train (pushed by a GP39H-2) is about to leave Camden Station in Baltimore. (I was out of breath at the moment, having just run several blocks so as to catch it in time.) A northbound light rail train stops at the adjacent platform. (March 1998)
