Baltimore, Maryland: Metro Subway

Description

Baltimore's 15.5-mile Metro Subway, a "heavy-rail" rapid transit line, is operated by the Mass Transit Administration of the Maryland Department of Transportation. It extends from the Johns Hopkins Hospital station in central Baltimore to the Owings Mills station northwest of Baltimore in the median of the I-795 expressway. The first 8 miles (from Charles Center to Reisterstown Plaza) opened in 1984. The "outer" extension to Owings Mills opened in 1987, and the "inner" extension to Johns Hopkins opened in 1995.

The Metro does not connect directly with the light rail line, but the Lexington Market stations on the two lines are separated by only a short one-block walk.
